You Cannot Summarize It

It’s been hard to delve into the chaos and feelings that come with the destruction of our democracy. It’s painful to witness, in real time, the dismantling of everything that made this country “great”, just so selfish, monied assholes can get even richer. We’re witness to the shredding of our constitution, and the rule of law, and 100 other things, while the nation is simultaneously looted.

It’s nauseating, and so I’ve stayed away from writing about it. It was easier to summarize a large passage of time. But on reflection, this is not a way to capture the time and the feeling of what is happening. I’ll miss important details. I’ll miss important impressions and feelings. It’s best to keep a running observation, whether they be multiple pages, or only a couple of sentences.

Where are we today? After days of tariff threats and increasing tariff percentages, our president used our country's stock market in a pump-and-dump scheme that likely made him and those rich assholes I mentioned earlier, a hell of a lot richer. Not that it matters 6 trillion in value was lost in the process. I can’t even begin to look at what has happened to my retirement accounts. So yeah, the market was tanking big time, the president said it was a great time to buy, and then the next day he pauses the tariffs for 90 days. On everyone except China. The market soars. Some people made a lot of money. I’m sure it wasn’t my 401k.

Where are we today? The president has been making threats about deporting American citizens. He claims his administration is actively looking for ways to disappear American citizens and deport them. Who do you think this will be? Anyone who criticizes this man or whatever it is they’re doing.

We’re done for as a country. I have no faith the ballot box is going to work come midterms. Possibly ever again.

It is strange to go about your day to day living. Everyone is going about their day pretending the fundamental construct of our nation isn’t being torn to shreds, moving from democracy to dictatorship. How long before voices of dissent are disappeared, never to be heard of again? I look at my wife and step-daughter and wonder what could happen to them as women? What sort of world, and what sort of opportunities are going to be available for my step-daughter?
